After her father is accused of embezzlement, wealthy Sara Stanley is sent to live with her deceased mother's  relatives in Prince Edward Island  While there, she must cope with her infamous aunts, Hetty and Olivia and with the mischievous antics of her jealous cousins.  Soon Sara must make a heart wrenching decision: whether to stay in Avonlea or return to her father. Everything comes to a head when the adults are called away and her older cousin, Felicity, is left in charge not knowing what troubles will ensue.

In "The Journey Begins," Sara Stanley, a young socialite, is suddenly sent to live with her relatives in the town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island after her father finds himself at the center of an embezzlement scandal.

In "How Kissing Was Discovered, " Felicity falls for the visiting team’s champion during the annual cricket match, and learns a harsh lesson in love with the help of Gus Pike.

In "All That Glitters," Gold fever strikes Avonlea when Ezekiel Crane proclaims that the island is full of buried treasure.

In "Sea Ghost," Gus befriends an old sea captain, Ezekiel Crane, who introduces him to his fugitive father. Now realizing his mistake, Ezekiel must fight to protect the boy.

Miss Muriel Stacy is appointed Provincial Superintendent of Schools   of Prince Edward Island, in "Aunt Hetty’s Ordeal" and teacher Hetty King must set out to recruit new students in order to prove her worth as an educator.

In "Old Lady Lloyd," Sara and her cousins intrude on the property of old Miss Lloyd, the town’s eccentric and wealthiest resident of Avonlea. Through her inquiries, Sara discovers Sylvia Gray (a struggling singer who is visiting Aunt Olivia) is the orphaned daughter of Miss Lloyd's ex-suitor. Miss Lloyd asks her wealthy cousin, Mr. Cameron, for his assistance so that Sylvia can complete her musical education. In the end, the children discover that Miss Lloyd is not a recluse but a lonely woman.

In "May the Best Man Win," Olivia King's old beau returns to Avonlea as a wealthy businessman and renews their relationship, with Hetty's approval. Meanwhile, the children persuade Jasper Dale to express his true feelings for Olivia. When a small boy is rescued from a well, Olivia learns more about both men, allowing her to make the right choice.

In "When She Was Bad, She Was Horrid" (Part 1), Hetty donates one of Sara's favorite dresses to charity without her permission, and Sara decides to run away from her capricious and domineering aunt. Sara trades places with a street waif named Jo Pitts, who looks exactly like her, and follows Gus Pike off the island and into trouble. There, they fall prey to Abe Pike and a gang of thugs who mistake Sara for Jo.

In "Sarah’s Homecoming," Sarah returns to Avonlea with mixed feelings after her father dies in a tragic warehouse accident. Her friend, Peter Craig, tries to cheer her up by taking her to the circus, where she is exposed to the dangers of opportunistic fortune-tellers.
