The 'Emily of New Moon' series of videos is based on the trio of Emily books
written by Prince Edward Island author, Lucy Maude Montgomery. This series, from Salter Films, was filmed in Prince Edward
Island, and follows orphaned Emily Bird Starr through adolescence into young womanhood.
Emily handles the challenges of growing up in the 1890's with poise beyond her years and
an uncanny ability to complicate the lives of those around her in a wonderful way. Emily
of New Moon has won the hearts of audiences and critics alike and has received the
Alliance for Children and Television's Award of Excellence. This fa
mily series stars Martha MacIsaac as Emily Starr and Jessica
Pellerin as Ilse Burnley, her best friend. The cast also includes Sheila McCarthy, Susan
Clark and Stephen McHattie. The series follows the story of Emily Starr, a free-spirited
orphan whose vivid imagination and passion for writing places her in conflict with her
strict adoptive family. Claimed to based more closely on the life of L. M. Montgomery than
any of her other books.

Episode Seven - "Falling Angels"
Guest stars Lisa Repo Martell as Maida. Oliver, Emily's cousin, announces that New Moon
actually belongs to his father. When his girlfriend Maida becomes pregnant she loses her
job and is left without any money. Emily, Ilse, Perry and their friend Teddy get her
settled in the Disappointed House and end up helping to deliver her baby.
Episode Eight - "The Tale of Duncan McHugh"
Guest starring William Greenblatt as Duncan McHugh. Young Duncan McHugh blames himself for
his mother's poverty and subsequent depression. After an embarrassing incident at school,
Emily befriends Duncan and brings him to New Moon. But when Aunt Elizabeth finds out who
he is, she demands that he leave. There is history between his mother, Alma, and
Elizabeth. A wrenching scene between Alma
and Elizabeth culminates with the realization that it's little Duncan who is paying for
the sins of his father.

Episode Nine - "The Wild Rover"
When Miss Brownell announces that she will leave her post as teacher to marry the school
inspector, her possible replacement, Mr. Carpenter, immediately recognizes and encourages
Emily's talents.
Unfortunately, Mr. Carpenter drinks. One night, he staggers into New Moon and calls
Elizabeth a book burner. She threatens to have him dismissed from his post. The next
morning, Emily, Perry, Jimmy and Laura try to get Carpenter cleaned up for his evaluation.
However, Elizabeth refuses to cooperate until Laura makes a startling point that shames
her into action.
Episode Ten - "The Ghost of Whyther Grange"
Guest stars Phyllis Diller as Great Aunt Nancy. When Ilse Burnley wants to learn about her
dead mother Beatrice, her father adamantly refuses to discuss it. Emily, who felt only
love from her own father, empathizes for her friend. While visiting her zany great aunts,
they tell her a scandalous story of how Beatrice ran away from her husband and child.
Emily refuses to believe it and she runs away and gets trapped in a rabbit snare. The
dashing Dean 'Jarback' Priest, a distant cousin, finds Emily and carries her back to
safety.
Episode Eleven - "A Child Shall Lead Them"
Emily decides to find out what really happened to Ilse's mother, Beatrice. Meanwhile Ilse
has gone to Shrewsbury with Jimmy and Perry on her own quest for the truth. After they
break into an old warehouse, the police arrest Jimmy and Perry, but a terrified Ilse runs
and finds Emily ill in the woods. Cousin Dean rounds up everyone at New Moon for a search
party, and Elizabeth follows the girls' tracks in the snow and finds them. That night
Emily, delirious with fever, discovers the truth about Beatrice.

Episode Twelve - "A Winter's Tale"
Guest stars Peter Donaldson as Ian Bowles. When a raccoon attacks Emily's cat Pandora,
Aunt Laura takes it to Dr. Burnley. There she and the doctor share a bittersweet moment,
which is witnessed by Mr. Bowles. When Bowles asks her to marry him, Laura says yes, but
not with her whole heart.
Episode Thirteen - "The Sound of Silence"
Guest stars Peter Donaldson as Ian Bowles. Aunt Elizabeth discovers Emily's deepest
secret...her writings on the "letter bills" hidden in the attic. This happens at
a critical time in Laura Murray's life, the announcement of her forthcoming marriage to
Ian Bowles.

Episode One - "Eye of Heaven"
Guest stars Michael Moriarty as Douglas Starr and Tom McCamus as Dr. Campbell. Emily Starr
was raised by her loving and intellectual father to be an independent thinker with a vivid
imagination. When he dies, Emily makes a poor impression on her aunts and uncles at his
funeral. While she hides under the table, they draw lots to see who must take her. She is
sent to live with her harsh Aunt Elizabeth at New Moon.
Episode Two - "Storms of the Heart"
Guest stars Michael Moriarty as Douglas Starr. Emily moves into New Moon with her spinster
aunts and her unusual Cousin Jimmy. Aunt Elizabeth, determined to "do her duty by the
child", forbids Emily to read or write fiction, and overwhelms her with strict rules.
When she finds paper in the attic, Emily can not help herself but to write. She and Aunt
Elizabeth have a showdown that culminates with Emily
chasing her cat into a storm that nearly takes both their lives.

Episode Three - "The Book of Yesterday"
Elizabeth horrifies Emily with the announcement that she will attend school. But her first
day of school ends in disaster, with taunting children and a mean teacher. But when Emily
meets Ilse, a wild
undisciplined child, they become best friends. Emily witnesses one of Cousin Jimmy's
"spells" and inadvertently reveals the secret that binds him to Aunt Elizabeth.
Knowledge of that tragedy gives her a
better understanding of them both.
Episode Four - "The Disappointed House"
Emily finds an unfinished, "disappointed" house half buried in the sand, and
takes refuge there. Meanwhile, New Moon's chore boy Perry desperately wants to go to
school but Aunt Elizabeth does not think he needs an education. Emily finds an ancient
letter in the Disappointed House that would have
saved heartbreak had it only been read years earlier. This truth shakes the house to its
foundation, trapping Emily inside.

Episode Five - "Paradise Lose"
Guest stars Maury Chaykin as Lofty John. Curious about Lofty John, a reclusive man in the
town, Emily and Ilse decide one day to sneak into his barn. He captures Emily and as
punishment, forces her to eat an apple he claims is poisoned. Convinced that she is about
to die, Emily tries to be brave and prays. Elizabeth feels honor bound to apologize to
Lofty John for Emily's trespass, but this only re-ignites the old feud between them, with
dramatic consequences.
Episode Six - "The Enchanted Doll"
Guest stars Maury Chaykin as Lofty John. Emily searches out the ragged remains of her
mother Juliet's doll and she and Aunt Laura restore it. Laura meets Mr. Bowles, who is
immediately smitten with her and hires her to make more dolls to sell in his shop. When
Emily's mother's doll is sent to the hotel by mistake, they rush there to reclaim it. Then
Laura discovers a heartbreaking truth about Mr. Bowles that
sends her home in tears.
